DETAILS:

Most students have no previous martial art experience,
so they enter Red Sun Academy as a white belt,
which is the first belt. It takes about four months
(longer for small children) to achieve their yellow belt,
which is the next belt after white.

Once the student has earned all 5 belt stripes,
he is eligible to test.

The tests are divided into 7 divisions:

1. KNOWLEDGE
...(white belts will not be tested on Japanese or Korean terminology)
...(yellow belts & above will)

2. BASICS
...(stances, blocks & kicks)

3. FORM (Kata)
...(a memorized set of karate moves)

4. SELF-DEFENSE
...(3 learned defense moves against a striking opponent)

5. WEAPONS
...(green belts & above)

6. SPARRING
...(yellow belts & above)

7. BREAKING
...(green belts & above)

The student is graded in all the above divisions.
They are also graded on their attendance and attitude.

When the student is invited to test by the Sensei,
the testing student needs to have a self-defense
and sparring partner at their test.
This partner should be roughly the same size
as the testing student (or slightly larger)
and of the same rank or higher.

Arrive to the test ON TIME and in a clean all-white uniform.
Your Red Sun patch must be on your uniform.

Testing fees are $25 and must be collected BEFORE the test begins.
Testing fees include the student's new belt and certificate (should he pass)
and a detailed testing evaluation report (if he passes or not).
In the event that the student does not pass, he will test again,
usually within several days or weeks. The retest is free.

It should be quiet before the test begins.

PATCHES
Your Red Sun patch must be on your uniform while you are testing.

TESTING FEES
Don't forget to get your $25 testing fees in BEFORE your test begins.
Testing fees covers your new belt and certificate (should you pass)
and a detailed testing evaluation report (if you pass or not).
You'll need to get the testing fees in before the test begins.
In the event that you do not pass, you will test again in certain areas,
usually in the next several days. .The retest is free.

PARTNER
Please have a self-defense partner
who is roughly your size (or larger) and rank (or higher)
with you for your test.

TESTING ETIQUETTE
Arrive to the test ON TIME and in a clean all-white uniform.
It must be quiet before the test begins.

• Do I have a patch on my gi?

• Did I submit my $25 Testing Fees?

• Do I know my knowledge (and terminology if yellow belt or higher)

• If I'm a colored belt (yellow & higher), do I know all previous katas & self-defense moves?

• Do I have a self-defense partner?

• Did I bring my sparring gear (if yellow belt or higher)
