Many fine examples of Victorian architecture can be seen in this tree-shaded neighborhood. Self-guided walking tours of the area, which encompasses 20 blocks bordered by Person, Edenton, Franklin, & Watauga/Linden streets, are available at the Capital Area Visitor Center. Adjacent to historic Oakwood is Oakwood Cemetery (701 Oakwood Ave., Raleigh, 919/832-6077). Established in 1869, it is the resting place of 2,800 Confederate soldiers, Civil War generals, governors, and numerous U.S. senators.
